How did you go about deciding on and structuring these elements? The film fuses dance, poetry and interviews. My sincerest desire is for viewers to see my truth and transparency in these stories, AND… also see the joy these beautiful women all have the love they have for themselves - no matter the path of loving and finding their own understanding of their “specific and particular” beauty, not giving up and reaching the ultimate destination. As a Black woman, who has been given a platform to speak, move and share, I have found it is my duty to broaden the path, as others who have come before have done for me. Being able to comment on my thoughts of what has changed in the last 20 years has allowed me to review, as an adult, not only what has changed but how I have lived, worked and even contributed to the changes. Just falling into my 50th year of life, woohoo, I have been witness to many changes in our society and in my specific art form. Hope.”Īhead of the film’s debut, ALL ARTS corresponded with Boykin about the film, how “aesthetic” informs how beauty is defined and what she hopes to see for the industry in the future. It is not my only focus, but it is a guiding arrow toward who I am. “There is no way I can be Hope and separate the importance of dance in my life. “However, my #MovementLanguage is dance, even my vocal cadence is in response to my movements’ nature,” she continued. When asked how she arrived at this focus, Boykin told ALL ARTS over email that she “used to say, ‘… to see me perform and dance is to know me.’ I am not separate from dance as I work and live, but I am also aware I have a great deal to say and I like to use all or many forms of expression at once.” The documentary meditates on “beauty,” “size” and “color” - particularly in relation to dance and the body.
